Samuel Asselin: Eating his sandwich comfortably!

As part of our series of articles on our graduates, Samuel Asselin, graduating from the 2nd cohort, talks about his background and his experience at CodeBoxx. Samuel looked for a long time before finding his vocation. A moment came when he was tired of eating his lunch in a snowbank in the middle of February and that’s when he embarked on the CodeBoxx adventure. He is now developer, happy…..and warm. Here is his story.

After high school, I did not really know in which area to go. I tried CEGEP in Mechanical Engineering, but I quickly understood after only a month that the traditional school system was not made for a person who likes the concrete like me. I felt like I was wasting my time.

Having several general contractors and several carpenters from the construction industry in my family, I decided to follow this path too and become a carpenter, even if I had never had any particular interest for construction. The places in the course were quite limited at that time (I was only 17-18 years old) and so I worked 2 years full time before being admitted to the DEP for a period of 11 months. Rustproofer in a garage, mechanical assembler in a factory, salesman in a sports shop, I had several jobs that allowed me to mature quite early in the job market. I then discovered the construction environment where I worked for 4 years. Since construction is a very physical job, you have to be prepared to endure things that few people are willing to endure in their daily work. For example, working outdoors in winter at very cold temperatures or in summer during the heat wave. In other words, it forges the character and tests the limits of a person very well.

Being a very creative, artistic person, who constantly has projects in mind, I decided, despite the beautiful experiences lived in the construction industry, that I would not make my life as a carpenter. Since I was very young, I have always been passionate about technology. In the evenings and on the weekends, when I was not working, I had fun at the computer: website creation, logo design, video editing. I have often been told, “If you want to be happy in life, you have to do what you do when no one is looking at you”. So I took 6 months without working to do a lot of questioning, a time when I thought a lot about my life goals and where I worked a lot on myself. It was this period of my life that brought me to CodeBoxx!

CodeBoxx just changed my life! CodeBoxx allowed me to reorient myself in only 16 weeks and to become a competent developer, trained with modern technologies, it is exceptional! A structured course and a listening team train you to become not only a good coder, but the bootcamp also immerses you in a business simulation that allows you to develop the qualities and essential reflexes sought by all employers in the market! As a result of the program, CodeBoxx partner companies that have access to graduating students have come to present their offers! For my part, I wanted to stay at CodeBoxx and be one of the developers assigned to one of their projects and that’s what I could do following my graduation. We work on really interesting projects and we rely on resources available at all times.

At CodeBoxx, I use my creativity every day, meet clients, code, build quotes for projects, and offer business solutions for a variety of clients. I’m blossomed like never before and all that has become possible thanks to CodeBoxx and the commitment I have shown to perform the bootcamp!
